welcome to

universal mediation services

Welcome, to Universal Mediation Services, I am Jackie Norton, the founder of UMS. I have been mediating since 1999 in both family and workplace settings and am committed to the idea that people can solve their own disputes given a little help and time. The company uses associate mediators who are at the top of their profession and they are allocated according to their experience.

what is mediation?

The questions below help to explain what mediation is and how it can help you. If you have a question that has not been answered then please click the link below.

your questions answered

mediation - what is it?

Mediation is a facilitated meeting where the independent mediator ensures everyone has the opportunity to have their say. The mediator will encourage and support you to express your point of view. You decide what you want to say and what you want the outcome to be. Your mediator will manage and control the meeting so that everyone feels safe, misunderstandings are clarified and hopefully, a way forward can be agreed which suits all parties.

who is it for?

Anyone who wants to settle a dispute. This can be at work; during the process of divorce or separation; between organisations, etc. We will endeavour to tailor our service to suit your situation.

When is it useful?
Clearly, the earlier in the dispute, the easier it is to resolve. Having said that, mediation can take place at any time. You may be thinking of going to Court or perhaps you have already been – we can still mediate. Courts do not deal with communication and practical implementation of any order so it can be useful to work that out in a mediation setting.
Where will it be?
We are based in the north of England but we can go anywhere or use technology like Zoom to hold initial consultations.
Why use mediation?
It saves time, money and stress. You stay in control of decisions made. There is often time to work out how to negotiate future problems and improve communication.
Is it legally binding?
No. Mediation is an informal process. To make it legally binding, you will need a Court Order. It is possible following family mediation to ask the Court to put your mediation agreement into a Court Order.
